This Benjamin-Button-like jellyfish can age in reverse
The jellyfish Mnemiopsis leidyi, also called the sea nut, has a reverse development, in other words it ages backwards, towards a previous life stage. It does this naturally when faced with unfavorable circumstances. Once the stress is relieved and food is available, the jellyfish continues to develop into an adult again.
A specific neural circuit plays a central role in the placebo effect
A neural circuit connecting the anterior cingulate cortex, brainstem, and cerebellum plays a central role in the placebo effect. The expectation of pain relief strongly activates this neural pathway, which is characterized by an abundance of opioid receptors. By inhibiting this pathway, the researchers disrupted placebo analgesia and lowered pain thresholds. Conversely, activating this pathway in the absence of placebo conditioning resulted in pain relief.
