A cellular entity retaining only its replicative core: Hidden archaeal lineage with an ultra-reduced genome.
An enigmatic organism, named Sukunaarchaeum after a Japanese deity, contains only 238,000 base pairs, less than half the size of the smallest archaeal genome known until now. Its genome is concentrated on three fundamental functions: DNA replication, transcription, and translation. This extreme specialization makes it a living being of a completely new kind, oscillating between cellular autonomy and absolute parasitic dependence.
