Maternal stress during pregnancy can literally reprogram the brain of the unborn child, creating a predisposition to anxiety that will persist throughout their life. Epigenetic modifications instruct certain neurons to react differently when confronted with dangerous environments. Future therapies could act directly on these malfunctioning neural circuits.
