Gene therapy to treat myotubular myopathy
Myotubular myopathy is due to abnormalities in the MTM1 gene which makes myotubularin, a protein essential to muscle cells. Thanks to a gene therapy which combines a viral vector (AAV8) with the MTM1 gene, five years after the start of the trial, 16 out of 24 children were able to do without respiratory assistance after treatment, 20 children can sit up for at least 30 seconds and, among them, 12 can stand up on their own and 8 can walk without support.
4% of the Icelandic population carry a genotype linked to serious illness
In Iceland 4% of the population carry a genotype linked to serious illness, particularly cancer and cardiovascular disease. These 73 genes taken from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines significantly shorten life expectancy.
Salted water is more complex than thought
The structure of salt water is more complex than previously thought. Above a saline solution there are a few layers of pure water, followed by an ion-rich layer, and finally the mass of the saline solution itself. This discovery can influence our understanding of many natural phenomena, such as interactions on the ocean surface.
